A brief history of Bookwrights Press

Bookwrights Press was founded in 1990 by Mayapriya Long and Philip Menzies. Our first address was in Brightleaf Square, Durham, NC. The business plan was to produce quality books of fiction and non-fiction. In 1991 Mayapriya relocated to Charlottesville, VA and the partnership ended. (But they're still great friends!)

Mayapriya and her staff continued with Bookwrights Press of Charlottesville. As a small, independent publisher, we publish both fiction and non-fiction. Technically, we are located in White Hall, at the foot of the Shenandoah Mountains-ten miles west of Charlottesville. The view from our window has changed since our days in Durham, but our publishing vision remains the same.

Bookwrights is especially interested in regional titles, literary fiction and scholarly works. Our imprints are Bookwrights Press, Southern Academic Editions and Shoji Press, Inc. We publish one to four titles per year.
